Installation of a License on Windows without Administrator Privileges

Admin => License

Installing a license on Windows XP or Vista requires administrator privileges in order to enable all users on a computer.

If you do not have administrator privileges, you cannot install a purchased license. However, it is possible for you to install or extend an evaluation license.

If a Sonnet license has never been installed on your computer, you may install an evaluation license (normally a node-locked license) without administrator privileges. You should select "Local" in the License dialog box, browse for the license file sent to you and click OK. Your software is then ready to use. In this case, your license file, sonnet.lic, cannot be written to the normal default location (<Sonnet Directory>/licenses/sonnet.lic) because you must have administrator privileges to write to that location. Instead, the default location for your license is "My Documents/sonnet/<version>/licenses/sonnet.lic." If you wish to change the location of the license, click on the Advanced. button.

If a user with administrator privileges installed your evaluation license and you wish to install a new license to extend the evaluation period, you will need to overide the administrator settings. Normally, a user without administrator privileges cannot install a license once an administrator has done so. However, if for some reason, you cannot wait for an administrator to install a license extension, you may do the following:

  1. Select Admin => Diagnostics => Environment from the main menu on the Sonnet task bar.

    The Sonnet Environment dialog box appears on your display.

  2. Select the "Allows user level changes in the license window even if the licensing was previously setup by the administrator" checkbox and click on OK

    Any changes made in the license dialog box will now overide the previous administrator settings. It is important that you perform this change
    before running the Admin => License command in order for your license to work.

  3. Select Admin => License from the main menu of the Sonnet task bar.

    The License dialog box appears on your display.

  4. You should select "Local" in the License dialog box, browse for the license file sent to you and click OK.

    The license is copied to the default location of "My Documents/sonnet/<version>/licenses/sonnet.lic." Your software is now enabled using the new license.
